YMCA Literacy Initiative

What is the YMCA Literacy Initiative?

The YMCA Literacy Initiative is a non-profit program that trains volunteers to provide one-on-one tutoring to adults in reading, writing and English as a Second Language. The Literacy Initiative also focuses its energies on Family Literacy.

Our mission is to improve the social and economic well being of our community by offering literacy programs that will provide all residents the opportunity and motivation to acquire the skills to read, write, speak and comprehend the English language.

Why is the Literacy Initiative so important?

How can I help?

The YMCA Literacy Initiative operates through the generous efforts of our volunteers. Please contact Ellen Gallimore or Sonsera Kiger if you are interested in tutoring through either the Adult Reading or English as a Second Language (ESL) Program. Please call us at (336) 727-9850 or email us at literacy@ymcanwnc.org. We look forward to hearing from you!
