YMCA Literacy Initiative
What is the YMCA Literacy Initiative?
The YMCA Literacy Initiative is a non-profit program that trains volunteers to provide one-on-one tutoring to adults in reading, writing and English as a Second Language. The Literacy Initiative also focuses its energies on Family Literacy.
Our mission is to improve the social and economic well being of our community by offering literacy programs that will provide all residents the opportunity and motivation to acquire the skills to read, write, speak and comprehend the English language.
Why is the Literacy Initiative so important?
- Approximately 20% of the adults in Forsyth County read below 5th grade level, well below what is needed for most jobs.
- Close to 50% of the adult Hispanic population in Forsyth County has a grade school education or less.
How can I help?
The YMCA Literacy Initiative operates through the generous efforts of our volunteers.
